What Is a Stoner Movie?

We’d love to take this opportunity to state that a “stoner movie” doesn’t need to be explicitly about cannabis, weed, or recognizable cultural touchstones — i.e., Snoop Dogg, Tommy Chong, or the 1960s.

Instead, stoner movies should just be categorized as films that have historically spoken to the world of cannabis and inspired a following among those who partake.

To get a little more specific about how we’re curating the following list, we should first examine the history of hemp and the big screen.

The History of Cannabis and Cinema

When enthusiasts meditate on the history of cannabis and cinema, a varied history ranging from anti-hemp propaganda to full-fledged love letters to getting high.

This CannaConnection piece thoughtfully points out how the first criminalization of hemp by the U.S. federal government parallelled the birth of modern cinema in the 1930s.

Reefer Madness

Reefer Madness is largely considered the first movie about cannabis, and it was an exploitation film that was designed to discourage consuming it.

The film’s over-the-top and downright fictitious depictions of the effects of cannabis portray it as a highly addictive cause of violence and mania. Reefer Madness is ironic.

The intense, high-energy, evil portrayal of the characters using cannabis in the film contradicts hemp’s reputation as a soothing, calming substance that promotes community and peace.

It’s so unrealistic and laughable, in fact, that it became a cult classic among cannabis users and lovers in the near century since its release.

A Cannabisless Cinema

Thanks to prohibition and a strong cultural stigma, cannabis saw minimal and mostly negative representation in American film from the release of Reefer Madness through the cultural revolution of the 1960s.

Near the end of that decade, two seminal films (at the top of our list) set off an age of hemp-positive films that continue to enrich today's culture.

Mood’s Definitive List: The Best Stoner Movies Of All Time

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey

For decades, movie lovers worldwide flocked to cinemas to take in one of the greatest science fiction films in history.

2001: A Space Odyssey is a Stanley Kubrick masterpiece that stretches from the dawn of man and its first bouts with violence as apes to a distant future where space travel, a rogue AI, and mysterious monoliths tie the history of the universe together into one long, slow, meditative watch.

We love putting this film at the top of our list of the best stoner movies because it actually doesn’t depict any cannabis use. Its acclaim amongst cannabis lovers, however, is massive and incalculable. Famously (or infamously), people used to smoke joints in the theater en masse to this film.

How can a film inspire so much love from cannabis users without depicting cannabis?

The high-concept ideas, the all-consuming classical music, and the story’s mind-boggling depiction of the endlessness of space and human potential inspire far-out daydreams, curiosities, and conversations that permeate film circles to this day. That is an ideal recipe for a “stoner movie.”

Stoner Alt: Easy Rider

Because of its lack of direct cannabis use, 2001 might not be considered a “typical stoner movie.” Because we love films with more overt and classically direct cannabis themes and representation, each film listed in this guide will include a stoner alternative.

Easy Rider is a great companion to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Released just a year after in 1969, this is one of the first truly great independent films.

Like Kubrick’s work, there is a slower pace to Easy Rider that lets you zone out while enjoying classic American rock and picturesque shots of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper cruising through America, with brilliant landscapes throughout the West and South.

Fonda and Hoppers’ characters famously smoke joints throughout the picture, and at one point, they pick up a young hitchhiker played by an actor who was lesser known at the time named Jack Nicholson.

The three iconic performers then share a doobie by a campfire while talking about conspiracies in what has become known as one of the quintessential scenes in the history of cannabis and cinema.

An ideal pair with Easy Rider, this 1g Kush Mintz Pre-Roll is available for $16 at the Mood Shop. Subscribe and save 15%.

2. Friday

We can’t speak for every person who has smoked cannabis over the last couple of decades, but there are certainly too many of us who have had a friend lean in close, look us dead in the eyes, and say, “I’m going to get you high today because it’s Friday. You ain’t got no job. You ain’t got...” we’ll let you (or Chris Tucker) take it from there.

An iconic introduction to cannabis for Ice Cube’s Craig in the film Friday became a well-known quote for movie lovers and those who have partaken for generations.

Friday is an amazing stoner movie because it puts the audience right in the middle of a quiet day in the life of a pair of friends who are whiling away the hours. So much of cannabis culture is about taking the time to enjoy a sunny day, sitting out on the porch, and having a laugh with friends.

We’re also all familiar with what it’s like to live out those moments while trying to avoid or forget about nagging parents, neighborhood bullies, or the woes of unemployment. Friday is a truly timeless film that shows cannabis culture for what it is. It will continue to be loved for a long time to come.

Because Craig’s forced to drink his cereal with water in the film, we think this pre-roll is an ideal companion to your next viewing of Ice Cube’s Friday.

Stoner Alt: Don’t Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Juice In The Hood

When it comes to spoof movies from the 90s and early 2000s, nobody was doing it better than the Wayans Brothers.

Most well-known for the immensely popular and stoner-friendly Scary Movie franchise led by Anna Faris and company, they also struck gold with a niche audience of potheads with Don’t Be A Menace.

Taking familiar themes and scenes from important works of cinematic drama like Boyz n the Hood, South Central, and Menace II Society — Don’t Be a Menace draws silly laughs wherever it can.

For high movie watchers who enjoy slapstick, the film’s approach to cannabis use with over-the-top and wacky flashbacks is worth a few laughs.

In a more pronounced sense, the movie plays hysterical homage to a range of classic movies that can tickle a high mind in two ways: catching the reference and laughing at the bizarre way it’s been reimagined.

3. Dazed and Confused

Alright, alright, alright... We know it’s not the most original take, but you can’t have a list of definitive stoner movies from the United States without including Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused.

Dazed and Confused, being billed as a “stoner movie,” has been described by its director as stunting its release. However, you could make the argument that cannabis lovers are the ones who gave it life as a now widely watched cult classic.

Linklater (Slacker, Before Sunrise, Netflix’s Hitman) claims the studio didn’t put its all into the release and underplayed the story by putting out marketing that focused too much on cannabis (remember that smiley face poster?), which is just one element of a larger tapestry of youth, conversation, and American culture.

Despite a relatively unsuccessful theatrical release, the film found life with extended midnight runs in theaters around the country, where cannabis users would toke up in their seats. Though not recommended, this contingent of movie lovers helped the film get the praise and recognition it deserves.

Following a group of high school juniors and eighth graders through their last day of school and the first day of summer. Set in Texas, the story takes viewers to a time of life when many of us first began to experiment with or see cannabis in the world.

More symbolically, it shows a time of adolescence most of us experience, a time when we started to go out on our own, and make our own decisions.

While Matthew McConaughey’s character thinks it would be a lot cooler if the younger Mitch Kramer (Wiley Wiggins) had a joint, the film’s appeal to cannabis lovers extends beyond these iconic moments. It captures an atmosphere we all seem nostalgic for, whether of the time or not.

Don’t worry, Mitch. We’ve got a joint.

Stoner Alt: Waking Life

For lovers of Linklater, heady ideas, and heady nugs — Waking Life is a mind blowing work of independent American cinema.

The story follows a young man trapped in a lucid dream. Searching for advice on how to wake up and return to his regular life, the main character (also played by Dazed and Confused’s Wiley Wiggins) participates in a series of highly philosophical and fantastically animated conversations that challenge the notion that there is more or less validity to what we see as our waking lives versus our dreaming lives.

It is aptly described as a trip. While not directly featuring much or any cannabis use, it appeals to enthusiasts for its out-of-the-box layout, artful rotoscope animation methods, and thoughtful meditations on life.

4. Knocked Up

Knocked Up is one of the first great pictures from the fruitful collaboration of Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen's post-Freaks and Geeks years.

As the lead, Rogen introduced himself to the masses as Ben Stone (nice last name) — a lovable pothead who smokes a variety of joints, bongs, pipes, and more throughout the film.

Hitting this adult-child hybrid with the very real responsibility of an incoming child is the core of this film’s comedic recipe.

Some of its best moments show the main characters playing their own homemade version of American Gladiators, plus Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd’s characters eating mushrooms and going to Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas.

With tons of riffs and jokes about cannabis culture, users, and trying to take life seriously while still enjoying it, Knocked Up will exist in the pantheon of stoner comedy for a long time to come.

Stoner Alt: Pineapple Express

Director David Gordon Green struck the perfect balance of heightened craziness and real-world reflections on the bygone stereotypical pot dealer in this early 2000s stoner classic.

Another Rogen-led delight, Pineapple Express, follows a pothead who ends up on the run with an unreliable pot dealer (James Franco) from a murderous cartel led by characters played by Gary Cole and Rosie Perez.

This silly film features plenty of humor and jokes that have been echoed by stoner bros and lovers of Eddy Grant for years since.

5. How High

What if you got so high that you got into Harvard? This admittedly stoner premise to a stoner movie is what makes How High so funny at its core.

Adding to the hilarious premise, this movie takes the bold and brash personas of Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man and Redman and puts them up against a snooty Ivy League elite.

The result is an hour and a half of killer insults, silly, cannabis-themed gags, and cathartic fantasies of a world where historically classist and exclusive institutions are put in check by two of the greatest wordsmiths of their generation.

Stoner Alt: Dude, Where’s My Car?

This stoner romp takes the stereotype of forgetfulness to the ultimate extreme.

For decades now, viewers have enjoyed consistent giggles from the goofy chemistry that Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott developed for this amazing movie.

The movie, available on Hulu right now, follows a pair of friends who can’t find their car after a long night of partying.

This beloved comedy includes timeless bits like the “Dude” and “Sweet” tattoos, an alien-themed cult devoted to a leader named Zoltan, and a never-ending drive-through order.

Avoid joining any cults on your next trip to the moon.

6. Woodstock

Woodstock was an iconic music festival that took place during what’s become known as “The Summer of Love.”

Featuring hundreds of thousands of renegade hippies smoking cannabis and peacefully enjoying iconic acts that included Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, The Who, Janis Joplin, and tons of other household names — the festival has become a symbol of the power and love of music, cannabis, and art.

The documentary of the same title stands as a portal for new generations of cannabis and music enthusiasts to enjoy the performances, characters in the crowd, and vibes of Woodstock.

This celebrated stoner film is one of just two documentaries that made this guide. In addition to its long lineup of iconic musical acts, the film also credits an assistant editor who would go on to do great things — Martin Scorcese.

Stoner Alt: Grass is Greener

For a documentary that focuses directly on cannabis and its cultural impact, Grass is Greener is one of the most informative and well-curated you can find.

This Netflix documentary focuses on how cannabis-inspired and played a major role in the development of jazz and hip-hop in the United States.

It then discusses our country’s convoluted history with cannabis, including some of its evolving legal and political developments.

Just before the documentary was released in 2019, the Agriculture Improvement Act (the Farm Bill) passed and removed hemp from the government’s list of banned substances. This opened the door for a whole world of newly legal hemp-derived products in the U.S.

7. A Serious Man

The Coen Brothers are on the more artistic side of the stoner film spectrum, and while we will pay tribute to their most well-known contribution, this less-popular choice is also worth a study.

Featuring a design, soundtrack, and movement that make it feel like a heightened, cinematic episode of Freaks and Geeks focusing on the dad, A Serious Man is a great time when you’re high.

It’s an ideal blend of abstract, nostalgic, and downright weird. For fans of cannabis use in films, it also features a great scene where Larry (Michael Stuhlbarg) and Mrs. Samsky (Amy Landecker) share a flirty and awkward joint.

For a good time, shop Mood’s selection of cannabis products designed for heightened arousal.

Stoner Alt: The Big Lebowski

The Dude abides and enjoys the wonders of cannabis in one of Jeff Bridges’ most memorable and iconic performances.

Casually rolling and smoking joints throughout the film, The Dude became a sort of hero for cannabis lovers in the years following the film’s 1998 release.

You may have noticed a lot of cult classics on this list, and that’s largely because of cannabis lovers’ innate ability to discover unique, funny, and special gems that went largely unnoticed by your typical Hollywood institutions and mainstream critics.

The Big Lebowski is no exception and is one of the best examples of a film that found its iconic status through video rentals and, later, via streaming.

8. Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle

Harold and Kumar represent American stoners from the early 2000s as well as any characters in modern cinema.

Bringing us into a mundane evening in New Jersey with an inciting incident of getting high and heading to White Castle, it’s an all-too-familiar start for cannabis-loving viewers.

The romp these two stoners go on following is arguably less relatable yet all-too-hilarious, with outrageous performances by Neil Patrick Harris, Bobby Lee, Christopher Meloni, and others.

In the lead roles, John Cho and Kal Penn work together to create a classic comedic balance of straight-man and goof-off. Each comes through with surprising dramatic moments that thankfully always serve as setups for incredibly silly payoffs.

Stoner Alt: Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay

We had to include a sequel on this list, and Guantanamo Bay felt like the ideal choice for a few reasons.

First off, it’s another chance to hang out with and enjoy a bong rip or joint with the lovable Harold and Kumar once again.

It’s also an even more heightened take on a stoner romp with characters jumping out of planes, escaping from prison, and some time on the lamb. The silly sequel also features a number of unique and hilarious stoner fantasies — i.e., toking up with a former president known by many as “W.”

9. Jackie Brown

This Quentin Tarantino classic is an all-around good time.

It’s beloved by cannabis consumers because of its killer soundtrack, colorful and nostalgic 90’s colors, and a drug-smuggling conspiracy story sprinkled with hilarious hijinx.

In terms of direct cannabis representation, the movie also features some amazing scenes with a younger Robert De Niro coughing uncontrollably from taking fat rips from an acrylic bong.

Stoner Alt: Inherent Vice

Joaquin Phoenix is peak hippie as detective Doc Sportello in Paul Thomas Anderson’s criminally underappreciated adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel of the same title.

Doc is a detective who is constantly rolling and smoking joints throughout the entire film.

Comically, he also struggles to find clarity in a world obscured by smoke, a secret dentist-drug-cartel syndicate, Los Angeles real estate conspiracies, and vibrant, psychedelic wardrobe pieces.

The effects of cannabis can make you relaxed and sometimes a little spacey, which are ironically the opposite vibes of your typical lead detective in a noir. Will Doc’s seeming aloofness play in his favor when trying to find the missing girl? You’ll have to watch to find out.

Inherent Vice is the most brilliant and rewatchable of stoner detective movies.

If you do have a mystery to solve, consider shopping Mood’s selection of cannabis products designed for a more focused high.

10. Super Troopers

This movie starts with a stoner’s worst nightmare — getting pulled over by the cops.

It also takes place in a time when all forms of hemp were illegal, adding to the angst. Most of us who have watched this film have watched it again and at least once shouted, “I’m already pulled over! I can’t pull over any further!”

In addition to inviting an audience to hang out with stoner state cops from Vermont, the film also exists as a great introduction to the Broken Lizard production company, which has put out a ton of timeless stoner movies.

Stoner Alt: Grandma’s Boy

Grandma’s Boy is one of the ultimate American stoner films.

It’s unabashedly “stoner,” with a plot that follows Alex — a video game tester and designer who is forced to move in with his grandma after his roommate squanders all of their rent money.

An adult suspended in adolescence, playing video games, microwaving bizarre combinations of leftovers late at night — this Happy Madison classic covers so many touchstones, stereotypes, and hilarious truths of what it’s like to enjoy cannabis on the regular.

Start your day off like Alex with some gaming and Morning Delta-9 THC Gummies from the Mood Shop. A 10-count is only $29.

Honorable Mention

We’re a little ashamed that we couldn’t get a Kevin Smith movie on this list. Beloved by cannabis users, this director has great options for movie night, like Mallrats, Clerks, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

British director Terry Gilliam’s fantastic films evoke a sense of wonder and imagination that’s truly beloved by cannabis users. Some of his most notable contributions to the world of stoner cinema include Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Brazil.

Some stoner films that are overtly passionate about cannabis and great for some laughs include Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke, Half Baked with Dave Chappelle, How High, Your Highness, This is The End, Ted, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High with a young Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli.
