Even if you don’t use cannabis (yet), you know that it’s an incredible plant with powerful psychoactive effects. Weed gets these effects from cannabinoids — naturally occurring compounds that the plant produces on its own.

Cannabis plants produce over 100 currently known cannabinoids, and each has its own unique chemical structure and effects. Today, we’re zeroing in on THC, the primary psychoactive component in weed, and THCp, a recently discovered compound with extremely powerful effects.

Here’s everything you need to know about these two cannabinoids, including how they differ and how to experience them for yourself.

What Is THC?

THC is short for Tetrahydrocannabinol. It’s the primary psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant, which means it’s most responsible for the high that you experience when you smoke or ingest weed.

This cannabinoid binds to the CB1 receptors in your body’s endocannabinoid system, altering your perception, making you feel relaxed, and promoting a range of moods.

The way you feel while using THC can depend on factors like the concentration, the presence of other cannabinoids like CBD or CBN, and even your metabolism. The strain of weed that you use can make a difference as well — which is part of why the products in the Mood Shop can help you feel creative, calm, aroused, and more depending on the strain you choose.

The Types of THC: How They Differ

There are three primary types of traditional THC naturally produced by the cannabis plant: Delta-8, Delta-9, Delta-10. Each has a different chemical structure, which leads to distinct effects.

  • Delta-8 THC has a double bond on the eighth carbon atom in its molecular chain. This small difference on the chemical level sets it apart from Delta-9 and Delta-10.

    • As a result of the double bond, Delta-8 is slightly less powerful than Delta-9 and tends to produce a milder, mellower high.

  • Delta-9 THC is the most powerful of the three variations of Tetrahydrocannabinol. It has a double bond on the ninth carbon atom in its molecular chain, which gives it the most potent psychoactive effects of any form of THC.

    • Delta-9 is also one of the most abundant cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant, and it has the strongest binding affinity with the cannabinoid receptors in your brain.

  • Delta-10 THC has a double bond on the tenth atom in its molecular chain. The placement of this double bond makes it the least potent form of THC.

    • Using Delta-10 typically produces a more cerebral high. The combo of Delta-10 and Delta-10 is more balanced and calming than Delta-9 on its own — but more powerful than Delta-10 alone.

Is THC Legal?

This is a big question, and every cannabis enthusiast should know the answer.

The legal status of Delta-9 THC changed back in 2018 thanks to the Agriculture Improvement Act, also known as the Farm Bill. Under this bill, THC products are split into two categories:

  • Hemp contains no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight

  • Marijuana contains more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight.

Based on the standards set by the Farm Bill, purchasing hemp products is legal, but purchasing marijuana products is not.

All of the THC products in the Mood Shop are classified as hemp goods based on the Farm Bill’s criteria. That means you can get our cannabis flower, gummies, vapes, and more delivered directly to your door if you live in certain states.

Before you order, make sure you know your state’s specific regulations for hemp goods.

What Is THCp?

THCp (Tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a cannabinoid with psychoactive effects that are thought to make it even more powerful than THC. Discovered back in 2019 by a team of Italian researchers, THCp’s potent effects took the cannabis industry by storm.

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol is a naturally occurring cannabinoid, but it only forms in small amounts in hemp plants. To get higher doses for cannabis products, experts create THCp in a lab by augmenting the chemical structure of THC.

THCp vs. THC: How They Differ

THCp’s molecular structure sets it apart from THC and gives it its unique level of potency.

The chemical makeup of THCp includes an alkyl side chain of seven carbon atoms instead of the pentyl group (five carbon atoms) found in the central ring of a THC molecule. This small difference makes THCp stronger than THC.

The Effects of THCp

Even in lower doses, THCp has a powerful binding affinity with the endocannabinoid receptors in your brain. This makes this new cannabinoid the source of a potent and long-lasting high.

Is THCp Legal?

As a psychoactive cannabinoid, THCp is one of the substances affected by the Farm Bill — the piece of legislation we talked about earlier.

Thanks to the Farm BIll, THCp products are legal if they contain no more than 0.3% Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol by dry weight. All of the THCp products in the Mood Shop meet this requirement, so you don’t have to worry about their legality.

FAQs About THC and THCp

Q: How are cannabinoids different from terpenes?

A: If you’ve explored the world of cannabis much, you may have heard about terpenes. Like cannabinoids, terpenes are natural compounds formed by all cannabis strains. However, instead of producing psychoactive effects, terpenes are responsible for the unique aromas and flavors that you experience when you smoke cannabis flower.

When you use THC products like flower and concentrates, you’ll experience terpenes firsthand.

Q: Will THCp show up on a drug test?

A: You probably already know that using THC products will cause you to fail a standard drug test up to 90 days after use. You might not know, though, that the same goes for THCp.

As a psychoactive cannabis compound, THCp and other hemp-derived cannabinoids can show up on a urinalysis test. That’s why it’s always smart to skip cannabis products altogether if you have a drug test coming up.

Q: Is THCp a synthetic cannabinoid?

A: THCp forms naturally within the cannabis plant, but only in very small amounts. For this reason, cannabis experts create this newly discovered cannabinoid in a lab to make it more available for use in products like gummies, tinctures, and more.

Q: Why is THCp so powerful?

A: The main reason for THCp’s potency is its longer alkyl side chain, which features two extra carbon atoms beyond the side chain of THC. This tiny difference on the molecular level makes THCp bind to the receptors in your endocannabinoid system (ECS) much more powerfully. The result is heightened potency for an intense and long-lasting high.
