How To Make Weed Tea: Step-by-Step Guide
Sipping on some cannabis-infused tea is a calming, soothing way to enjoy the intoxicating effects of THC. While you can pick up pre-made weed tea online or grab some from a dispensary near you, making your own at home isn’t too hard.
We’re big fans of DIY cannabis projects, and tea is one of our favorites. If you have high-quality flower to work with, you might be even better off making your THC tea at home than going out and buying some pre-made bags.

What Is Weed Tea?
Weed tea is a simple combination of boiling water, butter (or coconut oil), cannabis flower, and your favorite tea. It’s easy to make and even easier to enjoy. While it’s traditionally a hot drink, you can also ice your THC tea and sip it as an afternoon refresher.
Unlike smoking or vaping cannabis, weed tea gets you high without any inhalation thanks to a chemical reaction called decarboxylation (AKA “decarbing”). That way, you can still consume cannabis without a hit from a bong, vape, or another smoking apparatus.
Is Weed Tea Psychoactive?
There’s more than one way to make weed tea, and not every recipe will have psychoactive effects (get you high).
For example, steeping the leaves of the cannabis plant in an infusion teapot or teabag won’t get you high.
So, why doesn’t this form of weed tea have psychoactive effects? Don't you get high anytime you consume cannabis?
Not exactly, because you need to decarboxylate cannabis by exposing it to heat before you can make a psychoactive cannabis tea recipe.
We’ll talk more about decarbing below, including how to decarb your own weed at home.
Drinking Weed Tea: How Does It Taste?
Your cannabis-infused tea will taste a bit like the cannabis flower that you use to make it. However, the main flavor will come from your choice of tea bag.
Depending on the type of hot tea you like, you can expect your weed tea to be a comforting, soothing drink with subtle flavors and aromas of cannabis. If your tea tastes too weed-y, consider making a sweeter, stronger hot tea with some powerful flavors of its own.
Can You Make CBD Tea?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can have calming, soothing effects. It’s one of the most popular cannabinoids in the world right now in both topical and edible forms.
Unlike THC, CBD won’t get you high on its own, which makes it a fantastic alternative for folks who don’t want any intoxicating effects from their tea.
You can make CBD tea by adding a serving of a CBD tincture or CBD-infused coconut oil to a cup of tea. Keep in mind that some tinctures are flavored, which can, of course, change the way your tea tastes.
For example, our Ultimate Rapid Relief CBD Tincture has a tropical flavor that can pair well with some passionfruit tea — but not necessarily with a cup of chamomile.

Why Make Weed Tea?
Weed tea has some unique benefits that set it apart from many other cannabis edibles and drinkables. Here are just a few of the reasons we love it:
Self-Care and Relaxation
Sipping on some psychoactive tea is a fantastic way to take time for yourself.
The combination of some herbal tea (we especially love peppermint) with some of your favorite flower can be exactly what you need to take the edge off of a stressful day.
Winding Down Before Bed
A cup of weed tea can also make a game-changing addition to your bedtime routine. If you struggle to wind down at night and calm your racing thoughts, cannabis tea made with an Indica strain or an Indica-dominant hybrid might be all it takes to feel ready for bed.
Enhancing Creativity
If you need inspiration for your next creative project, try some weed tea made with an invigorating Sativa strain. Some of the flower in the Mood Shop is lovingly grown for creative stimulation, including Pluto, one of our favorites.

How To Make Weed Tea: Step-by-Step Guide
Let’s take a look at the steps for making cannabis tea at home using just a few simple ingredients: hot water, cannabis flower, butter or coconut oil, and tea — that’s pretty much it.
First Things First: Decarb Your Cannabis
Before you make your tea, you’ll need to take your weed through the decarboxylation process.
Decarbing weed turns THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) into psychoactive THC. Without this step, weed tea won’t get you high.
If you don’t want to sip weed tea with any psychoactive effects, you can skip this step.
Decarbing Cannabis Flower: A Quick Guide
Here’s how to decarb your cannabis in the oven:
Preheat your oven to 240 degrees.
Break your cannabis flower into small pieces and evenly distribute it on a baking sheet with a layer of parchment paper underneath.
Once the oven reaches temp, put the cannabis in and heat it for 45 minutes to an hour.
Check on your cannabis every 10 minutes and give it a stir with a wooden spoon. This will help you make sure that the cannabis gets an even amount of heat.
You’ll know your cannabis is decarbed when it has a slightly golden-brown color.
Deciding when to pull it out of the oven isn’t an exact science, but you can use the color as a general guide.
The flower should also have a crumbly texture when it’s fully decarbed.
Let the cannabis cool, then use a weed grinder to break up the plant material into smaller pieces for steeping.
Once you have decarbed cannabis, you’re ready to make some weed tea for the first time.
Step One: Combine Water and Butter (or Coconut Oil)
Note: If you don’t eat animal products, you can substitute coconut oil for butter.
First, combine four cups of water with a tablespoon of butter or coconut oilin a medium saucepan. Bring this mixture to a boil on medium heat.
Adding a bit of cooking fat (butter or coconut oil) to the water gives the cannabinoids in your weed something to bind to. Without fats, you’re less likely to experience the psychoactive effects of the weed in tea form.
If you already have cannabutter at home (a combination of decarbed cannabis flower and butter that’s often used to make cannabis edibles), you can skip the decarbing process and simply add your ideal amount of cannabis into a cup of hot water.
Step Two: Add the Cannabis
Next, add a gram of cannabis flower to the saucepan and let the mixture simmer on low heat for 15 minutes. You can modulate the strength of your weed tea by adjusting the amount of cannabis flower that you use.
If you’re new to cannabis, we recommend starting out with half of a gram of flower and working your way up after you know how you feel with a smaller amount. That way, you won’t end up feeling overwhelmed by the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

Step Three: Strain Your Mixture
Once the cannabis mixture simmers for 15 minutes, strain it through cheesecloth or mesh into a mug. Your strainer will filter out any bigger pieces of plant matter, which you don’t want floating around in your tea.
Step Four: Add Some Tea
Now it’s time to pick out a tea bag. Drinking a hot mixture of coconut oil, water, and weed unfortunately isn’t very tasty — you’ll need flavor from your favorite caffeinated or herbal tea to make the experience more enjoyable.
We recommend enjoying weed tea with a peppermint, chamomile, or chai tea bag for some nice, mellow flavor. Let the bag steep for three to five minutes, then pull it out and enjoy. If you want, you can add some honey or another sweetener into the mix — one teaspoon should do the trick.
Is Weed Tea Legal?
Before you try a weed tea recipe for the first time, it’s worthwhile to know about the legal status of cannabis in the US.
In 2018, the Farm Bill changed the way that many cannabis products are labeled and regulated. Under this bill, any cannabis goods that contain no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight are classified as hemp, which is now available in dispensaries and online in many parts of the country.
On the other hand, any products above the 0.3% Delta-9 threshold are classified as marijuana, which is federally illegal across the US. This includes any form of marijuana tea — you’ll need to make your tea with hemp flower to maintain compliance with the Farm Bill.
All of the premium cannabis products in the Mood Shop meet the Farm Bill’s standards for hemp and are third-party tested for quality, consistency, and safety.
Before you order, make sure you know your state’s specific requirements and regulations for purchasing cannabis.

FAQs About Weed Tea
Q: What is weed stem tea?
A: Cannabis stem tea is a potentially psychoactive alternative to regular weed tea that you can make using discarded stems from a cannabis plant.
It’s a sustainable, simple option that you can make at home with parts of the plant that you’d most likely otherwise throw away. For more powerful psychoactive effects, make sure you use decarbed cannabis stems.
Q: Should I drink weed tea or try edibles?
A: The way you enjoy cannabis is totally up to you. There are plenty of incredible edibles to try, from sweet treats like brownies to powerful tinctures made with cannabis oil.
You can use edibles for a powerful and long-lasting high, but weed tea can be just as potent and fun. It all comes down to your personal preferences.
Q: Can I make a chai latte or London fog with weed tea?
A: It’s simpler than you might think to make a tasty tea latte using decarbed cannabis and cow's milk or almond milk. Just follow your favorite recipe and add a combo of butter or coconut oil and cannabis to your water after it boils. It’s that easy.
